Even as a child, her sister Jessica Mitford remembered her spending "silent hours in the chicken house learning to do an exact imitation of the look of pained concentration that comes over a hen's face when it is laying an egg".

One of the Mitford sisters, she went on to marry Andrew Cavendish, who became the 11th Duke of Devonshire, and was a close friend of the Prince of Wales, as well as a host of artists.
Recalling her friendship with Freud, the Dowager Duchess once noted: "Good old Lu. I take him eggs every time I go to London."
